Have You Hugged a Blob Today? A Review of A Boy and His Blob

Every game should have the option to hug someone or something.

Every game should have the option to hug someone or something.

A Boy and His Blob was one of those games on the NES that seemed to be extremely loved in its own little niche way. I’m sad to say that I only played it once and only for a few minutes since I was clueless as to what to do. I knew that there was a boy and he had a blob that would follow him around and transform into things when fed jellybeans but that’s it. Now we get an update for the Nintendo Wii. Was it worth updating though? Really?

The answer is naturally yes, especially when you see how good the update looks. Just take a look at the images I’ve posted here. Go ahead, but don’t scroll down just yet or else you’ll give away the secret ending to the article. Maybe there is a monster at the end of this article, but don’t ruin the surprise.

Graphics Like Mom Used To Make

There should really be more hand-drawn art in video games.

There should really be more hand-drawn art in video games.

Graphics are not usually a selling point for me if I hear that the game doesn’t have either a good enough story or set of controls to back it up, but A Boy and His Blob stands out as something that just looks too good for me to worry about semantics afterward. We’re talking hand-drawn artwork here. That is getting rare these days but it always pays off. Seriously, A Boy and His Blob is one of my votes for best looking Wii game.

I’m happy to say that while the graphics are good, the play control is also excellent. It’s important that the game controls well since you’ll be playing through 20 levels full of puzzles, with another 20 unlocked if you know how to find hidden treasure chests in each level. It may seem like a light game but you’ll get quite a lot out of it.
